However operating a slew crane requires knowledge and precaution in order to prevent accidents and serious injuries.

Accidents can occur when a slew crane is not inspected in details before every operation. Therefore, the operators need to follow and respect some safety precautions when using a slew crane. If you are using a slew crane for your application, the following safety tips can help you a lot to ensure safe and proper operation:

  • Read the manufacturer’s manual and respect the rules.

  • At the beginning of your shift, check you equipment. Examine the load chain for twists or damages, the wire rope for kinks or fraying and the hook condition.

  • When in the cabin, stay completely focused on the work that needs to be completed.

  • Until all personnel are on a safe distance from the load’s path, do not lift, lower or transport any load with the slew crane.

  • Do not move loads over personnel with the slew crane.

  • To reduce the impact of the crane and hoist, slowly move the hook with the load.

  • Avoid quick direction changes and unnecessary inching.

  • To check if the hoist braking system is working properly, lift the load only a few centimeters from the ground.

  • Avoid swinging the load while moving.

  • Avoid sharp contacts between the trolleys.

  • Never leave a suspended load unattended.

  • Be aware of all overhead hazards, such as building and power lines that may be within the operation zone.

  • Check the ground conditions and ensure that the site is suitable for lifting operations.
