A pallet jack is a piece of equipment designed to transport pallets or skids in warehouses or retail facilities. It is a machine that can be easily operated, and no special training is needed. But like any other machine that is used for handling heavy items, using the pallet jack improperly can be very dangerous.
Although you don’t need a license to operate a pallet jack, knowing how to operate the machine safely is very important in order to prevent any accidents and to keep everyone safe on the job site. Consider our tips for safe operation when using a pallet jack:
- When operating a pallet jack, workers should wear appropriate safety equipment, such as: steel capped boots, gloves, safety eyeglasses etc;
- Determine whether the pallet jack is in good working condition before every operation;
- Take time to learn all the actions and controls before maneuvering the pallet jack;
- Inspect the place where you will use the pallet jack in order to ensure that it is clear and free from hazards such as ramps, steps, narrow openings, etc;
- Check if there are wet areas which can lead to accidents;
- Pay a close attention when lifting and moving loads. The load needs to be in central position and evenly distributed on the pallets;
- Call a second person to guide you if you need to carry a big load that limits your viewing area;
- Move the load slowly for increased safety;
- Determine the load capacity of the pallet jack and never exceed the advised capacity.
- Push, do not pull! By pulling a pallet jack, will you be at great risk to damage your muscles, back and shoulders. Move backwards for safe operation;
